Four Gothic Girls

Entry: 55
1 January 2002

I'm hiking through a forest with my family. I climb a sloping bridge and reach a mountain's peak. I look down and see a girl wandering vaguely in my direction climbing up the riverbed. She steps out of the riverbed into a patch of weeds above waist high. The weeds are dead and dried out but still have some blue and red color from withered blossoms. The girl is wearing a long flowing dress which hinders her passage through the weeds.

My mother joins me at the mountain peak. The girl looks up at me and I smile. She smiles back. The rest of her group appears behind her, three other girls dressed the same as she is and a couple boys. I think I should be embarassed about flirting with a girl while my mother is standing next to me, but I'm not.

After night has come, I find all of us are staying at the same inn. My family is asleep downstairs and the second group has the upstairs rooms. I come upstairs to go to the kitchen. As I walk past the hallway, I see one of the girls, still wearing her old fashioned dress, cross from one side of the hall to the other. We look at each other. I can tell she likes me.

When I turn the corner into the kitchen, my feet are floating a couple inches from the ground. I realize that I am the God of Turning Corners. I glide into and out of the kitchen a few times. Each time I look down the hallway, one of the girls happens to be in the hallway looking at me.

I start talking with one of the girls. I'm totally suave. I show her how I can float above the ground. Then the rest of the girls and the two boys are all in the living room sitting on the couches. I tell them to watch my feet and they'll see something cool. Before I can show them, I'm interupted by a conversation. I join in on the conversation and forget about my trick. A girl with long black hair says at one point, "I'm totally stylish. I'm like Pat Sajak." I flirt with her a bit.

I leave the room briefly. When I return, I see the boys are looking over my Dungeons and Dragons character sheet. I think this should embarrass me, but I'm not embarrassed and no one seems to think it's nerdy. "He should go on a campaign," one of the boys says. "But he's only got five experience points," the other says. "Looks like he's by Pier One right now," the first says. It's obvious they're experts at the game while I'm a novice. I break in and tell them that I've been meaning to train at Pier One to get my character better.

The Klan

A teacher dismisses her class, reminding them that their projects are due after lunch. Once outside, one student says to the other, "We've got 45 minutes. Let's hurry and throw something together." The two of them run home where they find me. They frantically come up with a minimalist project having to do with air while I look on with little interest. They then rush back outside.

I find a box of snacks on the kitchen table and take a large jelly filled donut. I start eating it and discover that it's strawberry flavored. I start to go down the stairs. I notice a large portion of the donut disappears as if someone else has taken a large bite. I then hear a commotion outside. It sounds like the two boys are coming back in. I go into my room to get out of their way, but then decide to go upstairs when I hear that Levi is sick. I think it's something to do with smog.

The other student helps Levi to the couch and reminds him they don't have much time to get back to school. I sit near Levi and see that he is indeed sick. He is pale and a cold sweat covers his face. I talk with him for a bit. At one point, I hold the jelly donut within armslength of him, and although he doesn't touch it or show any signs of chewing, a large bite is suddenly missing from the donut.

He ends up suggesting I do the project in his place. I start to tell him I know nothing about the project, but since they came up with it in a couple minutes it shouldn't take me much longer than that to figure it out, so I agree. I drive my parent's old bronco to the school and through a large field leading to the front doors. By the time I reach the entrance, the bronco has become a bicycle.

There are three Ku Klux Klan members standing in front of the entrance stopping everybody who tries to go through. I see the boy ahead of me recite something to them. He then takes up the post and the member he recited to goes into the school. I think this is how everyone enters. I don't know what I'm supposed to say to get in, but decide to play it by ear.

When I get to the entrance, I'm instructed to get off my bike. The oldest Klan member, their leader, tells me, "He just has to recite something to you," indicating the boy who was in line ahead of me. The boy goes over some rehearsed formal speech about how much he respects and loves me. The third Klan member meanwhile takes my bike with him into the school.

When the leader says I can go through now, I ask about my bike. "Just follow him," the leader says, "He'll be easy to find." I sensed some hostility directed towards me earlier and think it may be because I don't have pure Aryan blood. However, I feel I am on friendly terms with them when I leave. I turn right in the direction my bike went. I see a black student and think to myself it's a good thing he didn't see me talking to the Klan or else he wouldn't like me.

I walk down the hallway and come to an intersection. At first I go straight through past a group of polynesian kids. I see that the hallway is empty behind them except for two vaguely familiar boys standing by their lockers as if they're waiting for something. I turn around and have to push my way through the large group. They are snacking on donuts and slurpees.

map of dream

I then see Grant coming down a hallway wearing an eye patch. He notices me at about the same time. He turns around and we walk together to the arcade. Going to the change machine, I pass Morkal Kombat which nobody is currently playing. I think everyone must be playing Mortal Kombat 2. But then I see Mortal Kombat 2 is also not in use. I think everyone must be bored of it by now even though it's a new game.

When we get to the change machine, I ask if Grant really wants to play video games. He says, "Not really. But what else is there to do?"

I say, "We can find my bike."

I'm then sitting in a class room. I ask a student in front of me who is a Klan member where my bike is. He's toying with me and won't tell me where it is. Someone behind me says something and I turn to him. He's also a Klan member. When I face forward again, I see my bike is hidden behind the radiator in front of the blackboard. I point it out and the first student I was talking with says, "You really didn't know where it was?"

I'm then home in my kitchen. The phone rings and I pick it up, but don't say anything. The fellow on the other end of the line starts talking. "Hello. This is Gary from Kinko's. I'm calling about an application submitted by Darrell." He pauses, but I still don't say anything. "Hi Darrell. You have one message on your voicemail." I think he must know my name because he has caller ID.

I'm now talking to an automated system. I navigate through a menu to hear my message. "Greyhawk wants you to do his taxes for him." I ask the computer voice if this would be a good idea and the automated voice tells me it isn't. I know if there's a problem with the taxes, the person who did them is the one who gets in trouble. "Thank you," I say, and hang up.

Convenience Store

9 April 2002

I'm standing at the counter in a convenience store. My friend pays for something then turns to leave. I realize I've got to grab a few things real quick. Earlier, an old man asked me to get three items for him: a large soda, some yellow juice that I'll find "around the corner", and something else. I begin by looking for the yellow juice which is for the old man's wife. I walk around the cramped store, but I don't find any jutting out corners.

I decide to get the large soda first since that will be easier to find. As I walk towards the soda dispenser, I notice a wall of cakes, all of which cost less than eighty cents. I think that while I'm shopping for the old man, I could pick up a cake for myself, but I decide to find his things first. A boy who isn't in the store tells me to grab some cigarettes as well. He laughs because he knows I don't smoke and thinks I won't buy the cigarettes, but I decide to buy them so I start to look for some.

I see a comic book stand which has been thoroughly picked over. There are still many boys looking through the comic books that are left. I join them and try to find a comic I want, but I don't see any. I think there might be other comics behind the stand so I go around to the back, but find myself in the Home and Garden section. I try to find my way back to the comic books, but instead I find myself in front of the entrance to an expensive restraunt.

I look into the restaurant and see you get to the front counter by going down stairs covered with a dark red carpet. The old man, communicating with me by some form of telepathy, tells me this is where I'll find the gold object for his wife. I see several large candy bars wrapped in gold foil in a basket on the front desk. I go down the stairs and take a candy bar. I wait in line to pay for it behind a group of formally dressed rich people. The maitre d' can tell by my clothes that I'm not going into the restraunt and tells me the candy bar will be about eight dollars. I think that's expensive for a candy bar, but I don't want him to think I'm cheap. I begin to take out my wallet when he tells me it's already been charged to my credit card. I'm about to explain that I don't have a credit card when he hands me one. It is an American Express Gold card, completly gold in color. I see that it is signed on the back by Lorenzo Lopez, one of my coworkers. The old man tells me to take the card and I leave the restaurant.

Now I only need to buy a large soda and a pack of cigarettes. I notice a large cell phone store has appeared where the cakes had been. I want to buy a cell phone and since I now have a credit card, I decide to go ahead and get one. The store is crowded with people buying all kinds of accesories and extras for their cell phones. I want a metallic green cell phone to match the color of my car. I don't see many phones to choose from, in fact, there seems to be only one phone in the store. It happens to be metallic green, but it's kind of square and resembles an original Gameboy. I wanted a phone more sleek and dynamic, but I decide to buy it anyway.

I notice there are five cashiers at the counter, only one isn't busy. I stand in front of her and hand her the phone I want to buy. Inexplicably, she behaves rudely towards me.

I go to Pat's work which is in a large warehouse. He says he's ready to leave, but as we walk to the door, he suddenly needs to take care of just one thing real quick. I'm annoyed by this. Peter, one of his coworkers, tells me that time goes by real fast here because there's so much variety in the work. I tell him I've worked here before and already know about how fast the time goes by.

I see some of my coworkers go into a back room, so I follow after them. As I'm walking down the hall, Tiffany, who works on a different team, says, "Darrell, you're real smart. Can you help me with something?" I'm annoyed because I already answer questions for my own group all day long and now people from other teams are asking me questions. I sigh and walk over to her. She appears quite young and beautiful from a distance, but when I get close, I find her skin is wrinkled and has a blueish tinge to it. "What does X mean?" she asks. "It means wrong number," I tell her. I'm annoyed because this is something she should know already.

I continue down the hall to where my group is. While I'm there, Cy from the other group comes into the room and goes out the window followed by his friend and his girlfriend. Everybody laughs because they're sneaking out of work while on the clock. I'm happy to see Cy leave because that means his cousin Von, who I find attractive, won't have a chaperone. Mina is working on some kind of scrapbooking project underneath the window. I become disoriented for a moment and fall down on Mina's project. Everyone asks if I'm alright and I say that I am. I apologize to Mina and tell her I have glue on my ankles.

Von reaches out her hand and I take it. Surprisingly, she lifts me to my feet despite being quite a bit smaller than me. I then realize I'm still on the ground. Von reaches out her hand and I take it, but I help myself stand up with the window sill since I know she isn't strong enough to lift me up herself. She asks if I'm okay and I explain that the room is slanted. I notice I have a book in my hand that Pat lent me which is supposed to be a classic literary work. It has a picture of a lizard on the cover. However, the back cover reads, "Contains 10 different adult games you can play." I hide the back cover from Von so she won't think it's pornography.

I go back down the hall into the kitchen. Kyle is sitting in front of a table covered with a buffet-like selection of seaweed. When I come into the room, Kyle says, "Careful. Careful." I'm unsure if he's saying this to me since he's facing the wall. A chair blocks my path into the next room, so I move it close to the table. The chair is unsteady and I'm afraid it will knock into the table, so I move it further away.

In the next room, I find Pat watching an old movie with my father. It's a movie I've seen before and didn't find all that good. The movie is a dark comedy, an independant film made during the sixties which now has a cult following. It starts as a cartoon with the Flingstones meeting the Jetsons. The focus soon shifts to a dog who is piloting a flying saucer. The cartoon dog runs into an asian girl who is a live actor. The flying saucer cuts through the girl's neck. A manekin's head is thrown through the air to simulate the decapitation.

The scene shifts to a man and two women in a black and white movie. One of the women is holding the manekin's head. The man tells her, "You should be ashamed of yourself," and goes downstairs. The second woman is a maid passively watching this. The woman with the head turns to leave, but drops the head. This is meant to be a comedic moment. She fumblingly picks the head up and leaves the room.

I look at the cover of the book I'm holding and see that it has "For Adults Only" written on the cover in large letters. I feel embarrassed for holding it.

I look across the street at the liquor store. Someone drops a bottle which shatters against the ground. Then, the entire building goes up in flames. My cousin Curtis and uncle Bill also see this and we rush across the street to pull people out of the building. When we get there, the fire is out and everyone is dead. We go upstairs where we find a blonde haired boy wearing glasses. My relatives think he's a real boy, but I know he's a ghost because I saw him in the mirror earlier. The mirror is like ghost graffitti.

For some reason, law enforcement begins chasing me when I leave the building. I give them the slip, but they keep managing to find me because they can follow my scent. I have to keep moving or they'll catch up. Eventually I get tired of running. I stop at a resteraunt and get a sandwich. My coworkers find me there and I tell them I'm not running anymore. Lorenzo wanders away from me down the street and I think he's summoning the police.

When the lead detective shows up, he asks why I shaved my face and ran away. I cup my hands around my mouth and shout my answer because it should be obvious, "Because I'm suspected of a crime I didn't commit." He sneers at me and I ask him if he's ever been to prison for something he hasn't done. He tells me he has and I believe him. I don't feel so bad about being arrested anymore, and think it could be a good thing because I won't have to go to work for awhile.

I'm in the back of a pick-up truck. My father pulls it onto a dirt road despite warning signs with red letters that state tresspassers will die. The road dead ends and several boys emerge from dirty shacks to kill us. I fall out of the truck, but climb back in with help from Brent.

As we're leaving, I see Pat choosing a song on a jukebox inside the hostile area. I go to say hello and Steve follows me. Pat turns into David. The three of us walk down the road and enter a building. There's a large opening through which we see several horses. One of them is gigantic. We're amazed at how large this horse is. It steps over the fence and joins the rest of the horses. It's then as large as the rest of them.

I'm coming out of the front door of my childhood home. David is walking with me. In the front yard, he hands me a pen and pencil set with "J. Barrett" written on it. Inside are mementos from a girl who has just dumped me. There is a catwoman stuffed animal among other things. I then notice something on my hand. There is a note from the girl imprinted on my flesh. The words are very poetic and beautiful. In it, she explains why she broke up with me. The only words I remember are the least poetic, "I hate you. I hate you." Also imprinted on my hand is a list of items she bought for me, "nice cotton pants" among other things with prices next to them and a grand total of what I owe her.

I'm walking down a street near my grandfather's house. I see an old man who has just got back from being 30 days gone. He has a large stack of mail, some from Friends of the Community who wrote letters to him so he wouldn't feel lonely. In the mail is also a hat which reads that it belongs to either Mr. Moore or Dr. Smith. The old man's name is Dr. Smith. He's a dentist. Mr. Moore is a man who lives nearby. He's annoyed that they'd mix up their mail like that and throws the hat away. I think I might come back and get it later since my last name is Moore and it would be a funny hat to wear. I go back to my grandfather's house with an envelope. My father answers the door and I shake the contents of the envelope out in front of him. Sugar the dog comes tumbling out of the envelope.

Mr. Burns from the Simpsons is walking with my mother and me through a swampy area. When we catch up to the rest of the group, Mr. Burns sees a vendor and shouts, "Mr. Hamburger man" to get his attention. I watch a fish swimming in shallow water and think about catching it to eat, but as I watch, the fish swims out of the water onto land and gets stuck in the reeds and dies. There are these eels with one huge eyeball on the end of them burrowing in the mud. They stick their head above the mud and look around every once and awhile to spy on us, then quickly duck back under the mud. I find a giant wicker basket full of eels and I'm afraid to approach it. My brother Brent jumps up and lands in the basket, sitting on most of them with a deadpan expression on his face that makes some people laugh.

I'm then driving a car across the train tracks to my grandfather's house. I'm listening to some sports annoucers talk about an upcoming baseball game. The stadium is at the end of the train tracks, and in fact, I almost run into some baseball players who are driving to the game on the tracks. I want to go to the baseball game because I have less than an hour to live. I don't really like baseball, but it seems like the thing to do before dying. I pull into my grandfather's driveway and tell my family that I'm going to the game. They are happy that I'm going to enjoy myself before I die. I turn into Captain Sisko from Star Trek. I take one last look back, then toss a baseball in the air and catch it. Then I go off to the stadium.

Snipers

15 October 2002

My cousin April is at my house with her boyfriend. He talks about his plan to retire early by starting up a series of three businesses. She then says they're going to go watch Pokemon 3.

I go outside and overhear some men plotting. One or more of them are going to climb to the top of the apartment tower and shoot people. I hurry in to the building after them, but get delayed by a group of young men. When one of them steps out into the sunlight, someone shoots at him and they realize there are snipers in the building.

We go running upstairs along with a large mob of people who want to stop the snipers. At one landing there's a man who's warning people not to come into the apartment nearby if they have a weak stomach. I go in and find a man with his leg severed below the knee. His severed leg is lying on the apartment floor nearby. As I look closer, I find that his leg isn't really severed, only the leg of his jeans is lying on the floor. He is wearing white pants and is bleeding from his knee. I can't see how serious it is.

His wife invites everyone to sit down around the dinner table and serves everyone bowls of strawberries and milk. The man with the wounded knee sits down across from me. His bowl has a plum in it along with strawberries. I don't have a bowl and wonder if the one with the plum is mine. When I move it towards me, the man claims the bowl and gives me one with only strawberries. A blender is passed around the table and people pour the red paste from it into their bowls. I find the blender is full of strawberries which haven't been blended very thoroughly.

Our hostess says, "You can never have too much strawberries."

I add, "Or tequila," but everyone ignores my joke.

I look out the window and see a young man who looks familiar. Our hostess says he's always hanging around and I tell her he lives in the apartment across the street because I remember meeting him there. I then realize who he is. "He's my cousin in law." I don't want her to think I didn't recognize him at first, so I say, "I was just trying to figure out the word to call him."

Our hostess says he has been trying to make them a business proposition.

"Oh, ya, he wanted to start a small business, use the money from that to start a second one with your help, then he'd start a third one and be able to retire." I remember his plan does not involve running more than one business at a time. I also mention they're going to see Pokemon 3 and the lady thinks they must well off to watch it while it's still in theatres.

Everybody starts to leave. Then I remember the reason we came into the apartment in the first place. I pull out my cell phone and call 911. I speak with the dispatcher as I'm walking to the back of the building with another guy to stop the snipers. I tell her my name, which apartment complex I'm in, and the apartment number. I explain the man has something wrong with his knee. She clarifies that my name is Darrell, then asks the name of the man who's hurt. I don't know his name so I mumble something incomprehensible with two syllables. She asks if it's Nelson Jr, since she sees the records of who lives in the apartment. I tell her it's Nelson, since Nelson Jr hasn't been born yet.

She's then silent for a long time. I go outside the building and look up at all the balconies where the snipers could be. As I do so I occasionally step into the sunshine and the guy I'm with warns me that I'm in their line of sight. I ask the 911 operator if she's having trouble tracing where I am since I'm on a cell phone and she says that's not it. I say, "Oh, ya, you can find me by satellite." I tell her the twin towers apartments should be simple enough for her to find since they were famous historical landmarks before they were apartments and they're very large. I also tell her that I'm no longer at the apartment and I don't live there. "Right now I'm trying to stop a sniper."

She tells me not to hurt the sniper. "Don't worry. I wasn't planning on hurting him, just stopping him," I say. She asks me about the snipers. I say I don't know much other than they've been shooting at people from the second tower. Then I remember that they said something about Geneva. I'm in either Virginia or D.C. right now.

I don't see any sniper activity outside, so I go back into the building and pass Nelson's apartment. I recognize his apartment by the toy kangaroo hanging outside his door. I tell her the apartment number is 1078. She asks if I'm sure since she had 7180. I see several numbers written on his door, including 222 which is the section of the apartment, but I tell her I'm sure 1078 is the right number.

I go outside and the 911 operator thanks me for all my help and says they can handle it from here. I hang up the phone and see that the call lasted over six minutes. Then I remember calls to 911 are free, so I don't worry about it. Almost immediately after hanging up the phone, the operator taps me on the side and tells me thanks in person. She is in a wheelchair. She gets ahead of me and reenters the building.

I follow her in. She checks the guest registry and tells someone on the phone, "I knew it!" I walk through the main lobby where several couples are sitting together playing some kind of group game. I start to climb the stairs again, but the stairs only go up a foot.

I'm at Dave's house. I go down a long narrow hallway that leads downstairs. A robot is patrolling this hallway. I sneak up on it and disable it. Dave and Ricky are watching me and they are quite impressed. Once I'm downstairs, I see Nate playing a video game and realize I'm playing a video game too since I have a controller in my hands. I started playing the game upstairs and I'm meant to continue playing it on the downstairs television, but since Nate is using it, I can't play anymore.

Ricky sees this and says I can target practice. He indicates a box of guns and says I should take one. The first gun I grab is a shotgun. Ricky tells me this is the gun that made their dog Cain limp. I want to use a more elegant gun, but I've already chosen this one. We go out to the front yard where we find Dave and his girlfriend Elsa practicing with bows and arrows. They're aiming at a small white sheet of paper. It's too flimsy of a target to use the shotgun on, so I just watch them.

One of Elsa's sisters approaches and asks if I'm willing to apologize. She is as tall as I am, but I remember her being shorter. I say, "I deeply apologize for..." Then I realize I don't know why I'm apologizing. I look at her for a hint, but she says I should follow her to the driveway. There, I meet Maria, another of Elsa's sisters, the short one I remember dancing with.

I'm lying down on the driveway. Maria is sitting on top of me, stradling my body. I apologize for holding hands with her while we were dancing since I can't think of anything else to say sorry for. She tells me to apologize for calling her a bitch. I say, "I never called you a bitch, but if you say I did, I must have and I'm truly sorry." She then says she's going to take some LSD and I say that sounds like fun.

Later, I'm telling Pat that she's pregnant and she won't get an abortion because she's Catholic. I'm willing to do whatever I can for my little son or daughter. We're clerks in a comics store. A customer comes in and asks if Pat can help her with something. He tells her to "Shut the fuck up." I tell him not to say that sort of thing to our customers, but it soon becomes apparent he knows her and was just joking.

She shows him a Magic: The Gathering card with the number 51 on it, but someone has written a zero over the one, making the number look like 50. Pat gets a pencil and tries to erase the zero, but is unsuccessful. He tells her to wait a week or so and see if it goes away. I'm meanwhile writing out a schedule of dates new products will be available in the store. I hear other customers in the store talk about how often they meet together for campaigns.

Not So Dead

13 November 2002

I get on to my motorcycle. A girl is walking by close to me, so I wait for her to move out of the way, but she stands still and tells me to go ahead. I slowly inch forward until she's far enough away, then I take off. I can tell she's impressed by my bike.

I stop at this apartment where a crazy guy who killed some people used to live. He's dead now and the landlord is looking for someone else to rent the place. I don't tell her that I already have an apartment, I just start looking around. Some of his comic books look cool. There's a series about the Egyptian goddess Bast, another series about a man who dresses like a woman, and others with cool art work on the cover. The landlord's friend tells me I can buy them for 3/7th of a cent each.

After she tells me this, I look over the comics again, but don't see any I want. I then look through the dead man's clothes. His clothes are very stylish and look much better than the clothes I have in my wardrobe now. However, after examining them, I find they are far too small for me to wear.

I look around the rest of the room trying to find something interesting, but nothing catches my eye. Then I notice a woman dressed in some rather revealing clothes lying on the floor. She's been tied up and it seems like she somehow managed to get here from the balcony. The landlord is male now, as is his friend who is a police detective. We help untie the woman. "He made me dress up like this," she says, and from her voice we know she's a man. We explain to him that the man who did this to him is dead now.

I continue to look around the apartment and see a chess set. I ask if it's a complete set and the detective tells me that unfortunately, there are many pieces missing. I then see a cribbage board and bring it with me to the table. The drag queen sits opposite me and he examines a second cribbage board. His board is missing pegs, and mine has far too many. The drag queen, who may or may not be a woman, explains how she used to play cribbage with the dead man. It's obvious to me neither knew the rules to the game.

I'm then explaining what has happened so far to my family. I begin by introducing the area. It's this place in West Valley where this guy who killed people lived. That's where I was when I got robbed by a girl. My family doesn't know that I was robbed by a girl and I realize too late I had meant to keep it a secret from them. They ask if she had a weapon and I don't think she did. She was also of much slimmer build than me, but I was somehow intimidated by her simply due to the fact that she was robbing me. I explained in my defence that she was flirting with me and asked to see my driver's licence picture so that I would take my wallet out. She then grabbed it, took the twenty something dollars I had on me and gave the empty wallet back before running away.

I'm then back at the killer's place, but it turns out he isn't dead after all. He comes into the apartment and is extremely distraught that we've been going through his things. Of course, his possessions really haven't been rifled through that much. We try to calm him down, then he starts asking about where his wife is. He starts looking through the rooms for her.

I look into the bedroom and think I see a woman kneeling between the beds, but I'm not sure if I really see her. The murderer asks if I saw her in there and I go back in to look closer. He follows me into the room and we both see her at the same time. She is lying on the bed with a bloody arm. Her face is covered with dried blood and one of her eyes looks like it's about to fall from the socket. There is a white fan running which makes the room extremely cold. We think she's dead, but when we start talking to her, she answers.

I immediately dial 911 on my cell phone. I know the man beat his wife and I'm afraid he'll try to stop me from calling, but instead he leaves the room. I'm very shook up and pause frequently when I talk. "This is Darrell ... Moore," I pause because I'm frightened, but I'm afraid the 911 dispatcher will think I made up a name. The dispatcher asks what the emergency is. I first think she asks for the cross streets so I start trying to remember the address, then I realize she was asking what was wrong. "I found a woman. There's a cut along the length of her arm. She's still alive, but I don't know how long she's been like this."

"Oh you poor thing. The sink must have been full of blood." She thinks I'm a young boy and I've just come across a suicide attempt. I'm too emotionally wracked to contradict her. She continues to say, "Tell her we'll be over there right away." It sounds like she's about to hang up, so I quickly ask if she knows my location. She says she does, but I tell her roughly what the address is anyway.

The Kiwi

15 November 2002

I'm in an office building. One of the businessmen is pissed off at me. I'm trying to get away from him without looking like I'm running away. I go outside the building to where the bathroom is. The guy who is mad at me asks where I'm going. I tell him, "I'm going to take a piss." He follows me.

The bathroom is in a building of its own called The Kiwi. It looks like a fancy resteraunt from the outside. When I go inside, I notice several wooden tables and chairs are set up, but all are empty at the moment. The walls are lined with trash cans, the kind that are long and tall with rounded domes on top. There are men in business suits urinating into these trash cans. My first thought is that this place is too fancy for me, but a maitre d' of sorts welcomes me to The Kiwi, and I realize I'm wearing a suit like everybody else.

I need to pee, so I look for an open trash can. They are arranged in groups of three. There are two groups on the east and west wall and one group of three on the south wall. While there are open cans, I don't want to stand too close to anybody. I notice three which aren't being used on the east wall, so I go over there, but I notice two waiters and a waitress are servicing the trash cans. I look around and see the most isolated one is next to a woman who has lifted up her dress and is peeing standing up like the men.

I stand in front of the trash can close to hers and start peeing. I notice that instead of a penis, I have a vagina, although I am still a man from the waist up. I hold my vagina open and pee into a small slit in a black plastic bag that's inside the trash can. It's a very small target, but I have surprisingly good aim for my first time urinating with female equipment. The man who was mad at me asks where my penis is. I reply, "I don't have a dick." I say this to him rudely since it should have been obvious to him. It feels real good to pee. In fact, I start to realize this is a dream and I worry that I'll wake up with a wet bed. (I don't, thankfully.)

I finish urinating and go to the north wall of The Kiwi, which is a bar. I have a margarita and it tastes okay, although it was a small glass and it wasn't lined with salt. It has a vague lime flavor. I get a couple more drinks from the bartender.

I'm then a teenager walking home from high school. My coat's pockets are so full, I have to carry my cell phone in my hand. I'm also carrying my books and somehow balancing a CD player on my stomach. Another kid is walking in front of me. He's walking slowly because he knows I'm behind him and he wants me to pass him. I don't mind walking slowly, so I stay behind him until he's basically standing still.

Once I walk in front of him, he asks what I do. I tell him I go to school. He says, "I steal things." I notice he has a friend with him. He looks at my cell phone. I don't want him to have it. I put it in my coat pocket and say, "I'm going to run away now." I have a head start, but he's just as fast as I am, so if I slow down at all he'll catch me.

We're running through a forested area. Puddles of mud and moisture on the trees shows that it has rained recently. The ground is very slippery, but I never make a mistep. Neither do they. I see an aspen tree which has fallen over leaning up the slope about forty degrees. I dash up it, avoiding branches that stick out, and miraculously don't slip. They follow me without slipping or slowing down. I run up another fallen aspen, just as steep as the first, then I stop and turn around.

My pursuer sees that I'm not running anymore, so he walks up to me slowly with a creepy smile on his face. When he's close enough, I push him off the tree and he falls into the mud below. I turn and run away again, now with only his friend chasing me. I leap from one fallen tree to another, this time on flat ground, gingerly avoiding patches of mud. I run across slippery rocks and tree trunks, but somehow I never lose my footing. Neither does my pursuer.

While I run from him, I taunt him. I know his name is Shinobi and the one I pushed over is the leader of the two. I say things like, "You're Shinobi. You should get the mint." Meaning that he should be the leader since he's the only one still chasing me.

We eventually reach a strip mall and I tell Shinobi he'd better stop chasing me now or I'll get the people inside to chase him. He decides to give up the chase and goes back to the woods. I go inside the building and get a yogurt with my friend Erik. We then wait for David C. who's in line to get a soda.

Two Towers

18 November 2002

I'm in my parent's bedroom looking at a Meat Puppets box set. There are a couple early albums, an Abra Moore CD for some reason, as well as a few singles and live shows. I own most of the CDs already, but there's one or two I don't have, so I'm concidering buying it. Some representatives from Columbia House are in the room with me and they're trying to convince me to buy the set. They say I'll probably like it because I've bought other Meat Puppets CDs in the past. I decide not to purchase it.

Mom starts showing off Steve's guitar to all the people in the room. She puts a Nirvana CD in the computer and uses the mouse to strum a picture of a guitar on the computer screen while the music plays. The computer is hooked up to a robotic arm which strums Steve's guitar along with the music. Mom turns the volumn down since it's too loud at first, but I point out that a large crowd has formed outside to hear the music, so Mom turns the volumn back up.

I go outside and walk among the crowd. Three girls dancing to the music notice me and call me over to join them. The four of us put our arms around each other, forming a square. However, dancing like this is awkward. One of the girls leaves, and it's much easier for us to dance.

The music stops and I walk back to the front of the house with my arms wrapped around the two girls. I see Mom and she tells me to look behind me. There are two towers. The one in the distance has crumbled so that it's only about two stories tall. The near tower is just as aged, but still stands at its full height. Mom tells me this is the tower where Mark Hoffman (a famous forger currently in jail for murder) wanted to shot himself.

One of the girls leaves and I walk to the near tower with the last remaining girl. As we approach, the near tower topples over so that it is now no taller than the far tower. We get to the tower and climb up a stone ramp that leads to a room on the second story. We can see some people inside the room. There are about five men and one woman standing or sitting in chairs facing the center of the room as if they're having a meeting. The woman is taking off her clothes.

The girl I'm with is ahead of me. When she tries to enter the room, she runs into an invisible force field which pushes her and me back down the ramp. I notice other girls trying to get into the room being pushed back as well. A disembodied voice announces that girls can't come in. I carry the girl on my shoulders back up the ramp. I meet resistance from the blue force field, but I'm able to push myself inside the room. The voice announces that humble boys can come inside. The woman who was taking off her clothes is now naked, but I don't pay attention to her because I already have a girl. I walk to an empty chair and sit down, with the girl still perched on my shoulders. Once I let go of her, she climbs off the chair and joins a man sitting on the floor.

Once everyone sees me get inside, a lot of boys come into the room, but once they see how crowded this place is, everyone leaves. I find myself alone in the room, but then a guy sticks his head in the doorway and slides a key to me across the floor. I pick it up. The guy motions for me to use the key in the ceiling. There's a circle in the center of the ceiling with two keyholes and something sticking out. I put the key in and the thing hanging from the ceiling comes loose. It's another key.

I leave the tower and find out the guy who gave me the key mistook me for someone else. He's in a group of about half a dozen boys who were waiting for everyone to leave the room so they could get the two keys from the ceiling. The boy with the first key is very angry and demands that I give my key to the boy who was meant to have it. I tell him the key is mine and anyway, I'll ask for a much smaller cut than the boy who was meant to have it. He isn't happy, but I'm keeping the key, so he lets me tag along with his group.

We go to a computer room with free access to the public. The boy with the first key uses it to activate the computer by the door and they start playing a video game. I find an empty computer and use my key to activate it. The little girl sitting at the computer across the table is very afraid of me even though I act friendly towards her. This computer has three mini touch pads and one large touch pad. I put one finger each on the miniature touch pads and use my left hand on the large one. The controls to the game are very difficult and I'm not able to do anything at all.

After a few seconds, time is up. I lost, but the computer spits out several ornate toy cigarettes as a consolation prize. I put these in my coat pocket. I also get my key back. The group I was with have finished using the first key. I use my key on their computer and a short video of me running into the computer center ahead of the other boys is played. Then a three dimensional space ship game appears. At first, the green space ships are good and the red ones are bad, but when the red ones are almost gone, the green space ships turn into enemies as well.

The boy with the first key shoots for me while I aim the ship. We do very badly, and he gets mad, saying that I'm going to lose and their plan will be ruined. Then I take over shooting and aiming and do much better. I destroy all the other space ships.

I'm then walking outside. A man tells me if I don't turn around, I'll wind up on the 56th Street of the Bronx. I was wandering aimlessly, but don't want to seem like I am, so I say that's where I want to go. The man tells me, "Good luck," because I'll be the only white person in the black neighborhood, but I don't think I need to worry.

As I'm walking down the street, a man with a cart pulls up near me. He is handing out candy and other things for free. A crowd of people surrounds him. I look over everything he has in the cart. A police woman warns him to be careful about what he hands out. He says there's nothing to worry about since he waited until it was night, so everyone under eighteen is asleep by now. I didn't see anything in his cart that would be inappropriate for children, but then realize a package he just handed to a woman had fireworks in it.

I then become Pistacio Disguisey and there's a war between the mice and the dogs. I say that's stupid because it should be cats versus mice or cats versus dogs. Despite my protest, the war is on and I'm in the middle of it. A pack of dogs chases me and I jump off a bridge. There are dogs under the bridge and they chase me up a wall. I then see some mice trying to climb up the windshield of a snow covered van. I lift all the small mice up, but there are two big mice in human form about the size of an eight and ten year old. I pick the first up and toss him onto the roof of the van. I try to pick up the second, but he wants me to give him a boost, so I lock my hands together and he puts his foot on my hands. I boost him up into the air, but he misses the van and lands on the concrete to the side.

The Ring

22 November 2002

I have a magic ring which allows me to become invisible and fly. I'm flying over Fort Union Boulevard, when I become aware that the police have found a way to detect me and they've sent a detective to find me. I fly back up the street and hide with a friend of mine who is selling scarves on the side of the road. I hide the ring under the seat cushion of the chair I'm sitting on. The ring has a glow and sparkle about it, so I have to remain seated or it will be visible.

When the detective walks by wearing regular street clothes, she exchanges some words with the scarf lady. She's about to keep walking down the street to my last known location, when the scarf lady asks if she'd like to buy a scarf. Another friend of mine nearby critisizes the scarf lady in a whisper, telling her she should have let the detective leave. The detective decides to come back and look at the scarves.

The scarf lady says she uses two different fabrics and she can make a special scarf with both fabrics for the detective. One fabric resembles denim and is rough and textured. The other fabric is soft and smooth and resembles leather. I picture in my head what the two would look like together and it would make a very nice scarf. The detective is interested in the scarves until she sees a price listing. "These are too expensive," she says.

She turns around to leave again, but I don't want her to be suspicious about us letting her leave so easily, so I say, "Good thing you didn't want the suspenders." On the price listing, there are just two items, the expensive suspenders, and reasonably priced fabric. She comes back and looks at the prices and realizes it was the price of the suspenders which was too expensive, not the fabric.

While the detective is shopping, I get bored of just sitting around, so I leave my body and fly down the street while invisible. I see some papers below, and I want to prove that people really can leave their bodies, so I descend and read the papers which I've never seen before. If the papers say the same thing when I'm in my body, that will prove that I really left my body and didn't just dream it.

A guy standing nearby likes my plan, and decides to help me verify what the papers say. I first read aloud a newspaper advertisement all the way through and try to remember it for when I come back here later. I then notice an Eddie Brickel CD underneath the paper and read the track listings. There's another CD which is barely visible, but I'm able to read Kristen Barry from the spine. I also notice the tip of a pencil sticking out from underneath the first CD.

When I return to the scarf lady's stall, I see that the detective just found a clue to my identity: the imprint my butt left on the seat cushion. "Looks comfortable," the scarf lady says. The detective now knows what the invisible man's butt is shaped like. I'm worried she'll figure out that it's me since I was the last person to be sitting there, but she doesn't concider me a suspect.

We're then in a bar where they're having a model contest. There are about fifty girls seated in the front facing the stage. The winner will get to become a professional model. They're just about ready to wrap up the contest and declare a winner. The announcer says, "Only three of you will get to make a speech." The girls all think this is unfair, because the three who make speeches are more likely to win. I think it's unfair too, but I'm glad I don't have to listen to fifty different speeches.

My mom is sitting in the back inbetween me and the detective. One of the girls who gets to make a speech comes over and starts looking through my things. I'm afraid she'll find out my secret, so I quickly give her my notebook and tell her she can use that to write her speech. The top page has writing on it, but I tell her the next page is blank. Mom warns me too late that the next page isn't blank.

The blonde girl finds out the next page has writing on it, and instead of showing it to me, she shows it to the detective. "This page has sports phrases on it," she tells the detective. This is all the evidence she needs to figure out that I'm the one she's been looking for. I leave my body and fly around the bar. I'm invisible, but the detective can see me. I fly around playfully and pass through solid objects like a ghost. She sees that I'm harmless.

I'm then leaving the bar and see a friend of mine walking with a group of people. I run up to him and ask, "Do you think she'll press charges against me?" I don't know the detective's name and think of her as the blonde woman.

"Who? Kim Preston? No. She's going after the doctors that did this to you."

"Then I'd have to be a witness? They'll kill me. I need to find others the doctors experimented on and have them be witnesses in my place."

One of the guys in the group has unbuttoned his shirt and is looking at his chest. "Hey, I've got some weird ring tattoo," he says. The ring tattoo means the doctors experimented on him.

Our group then turns the corner onto Fort Union. A sprinkler on the other side of the road gets us wet. A couple guys in the group are watching the traffic and I think they're waiting for the right moment to cross the street. When traffic is pretty much clear, I dash across the road, but no one else follows me. One of them asks, "Where's the D-man going?" And my friend tells him I live there. Another guy says that if I'd lived so close, I should have drove. I start walking down the street to my childhood home, when I realize I did drive. I shout across the street, "Who wants to go back to the club with me to get my car?"

I'm then parking my parent's van in the cul-de-sac. When I get out of the van, a sprinkler hits me. I then notice I'm somewhat in the way of a truck parked nearby and think of parking the van better. I look into the van and see Sugar the dog is inside and I think I should get her out of the van. But I tell myself the rest of my family will be home soon and they'll want to move the cars around, so I'll wait till then.
