In matters of courage
the pacifists
who turn their cheek
with a fiery tongue
meet the devil within

the artist eating and drinking
his fill
flagrantly
with a passionate will
most knows God in his portrayal.
 
In matters of faith
in a world of tin,
in a world of plastic burning, doubt
in the rich man's wealth
with a love like a thief
come among the meek
 
in seed for the women of the night
is more in its way the word of God
with its cheap brown loaf
and its bucket of ale
 
...the prophet himself learns his belief
through a magical blasphemy of heart
just as God bequeaths to Adam's kin
a testimony as pure as art.
