Monkeys in the Library
MONKEYS: dreaming of monkeys, shows you have malicious, strange, and secret
enemies. Le Marchand’s Fortune Teller, and Dreamer’s Dictionary. New York: Dick
& Fitzgerald, 1863.
They catalog the leftovers in the staff refrigerator, go to the bathroom on the
reference desk. They drool on the computer keyboards. They are noisier than the
undergraduates, significantly hairier than the faculty. What have they done
with the librarians? These monkeys chatter chatter, they ooh ooh ooh ah ah ah,
they beat their chests, climb the shelves, swing from newly installed vines and
tear up the books to pillow their nests.
All librarians have this dream. All of them, together, the same night, dream of
the monkeys and summon them into being.
